When comparing one religious tradition with another, it’s advantageous to begin at the beginning, or with the overall picture. The traditional Christian belief is based on the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. The Mormon belief is based on the Bible, but is also structured around The Book of Mormon, considered by Mormon followers to be another testament of Jesus Christ. After comparing the Scriptural evidence of the Bible with the beliefs and writings of Mormonism, one can undoubtedly come to the conclusion that Mormonism is not Christianity. It might be more appropriate to give Mormonism its own religious title, because clumping Mormonism in with Christianity does not seem logical. There are simply too many differences and contradictions between Mormon beliefs and the foundations of Christianity that are found in the Bible. The Bible is the only authority in Christianity, so for another religious tradition to accumulate so many differences and still call itself a Christian belief is a highly dishonest and misleading act.

On the subject of God, Christians believe that Jesus was baptized; the Spirit descended upon him; the Father spoke, and all are one in the same person (Matthew 3:16-17). This is the basis of the Trinity doctrine: that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all one in the same being. The Mormon doctrine believes otherwise. James Talmage said, “This cannot rationally be construed to mean that the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are one in substance and in the same person” (Articles of Faith, p.40). Bruce McConkie goes on to explain more in depth: “There are three Gods… separate in personality, united in purpose, in plan, and in all attributes of perfection” (Mormon Doctrine, p. 670). Not only do Mormons believe that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are not the same being, but they believe that there are three different Gods altogether. This openly contradicts the foundation of Christianity: there is only one God.

Mormonism and Christianity also differ on the subject and person of Jesus Christ. Mormonism teaches that Jesus was the physical son of Mary and Adam and that there is nothing in Jesus’ life that is unattainable by everyone else on Earth.
