Intelligence

Intelligence is the ability to learn from experience, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with the environment. Louis Thurstone believed with his Theory of Primary Mental Abilities that intelligence was comprised of nine distinctly different elements, which he named as the primary mental abilities. These nine primary mental abilities were: visual and spatial ability (the ability to picture shapes and spatial relationships), perceptual speed (the ability to understand perceptual information rapidly and to see the similarities and differences between stimuli), numerical ability (the ability to calculate and recall numbers), verbal meaning (knowledge of the meanings of words), memory (the ability to recall information, such as words and sentences), word fluency ( the ability to thin of words quickly for such tasks as rhyming or doing crossword puzzles), deductive reasoni


Robert Sternberg believed with his Triarchic Theory that there were three different kinds of intelligences that all work together. From that belief, Sternberg created a triarchic model of intelligence to illustrate his theory. In Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory, intelligence is divided into the analytic (the ability to solve problems), the creative (the ability to deal with new situations), and the practical (the ability to accomplish everyday tasks). Often do we use more than one of these parts simultaneously. When one is driving and suddenly a man running a one-minute mile dashes across the street, one’s intelligence kicks in.
