Although initially slammed with harsh financial reparations from the Treaty of Versailles, the Weimar Republic of Germany led a slow by definite resurgence and recovery of the German economy. Unfortunately for Germany, and eventually the entire world, the Great Depression of the 1930’s struck a crippling and debilitating blow to the recovering German economy. The new financial hardships in Germany created a profound resentment toward the Weimar Republic and were instrumental in the rise of fascism in Germany. In 1933, by exploiting the State of Emergency Clause in the Weimar Constitution, which stated that at a time of crisis, one person could assume complete control of the government, Adolf Hitler, the leader of the Nazi Party, became the dictator of the Third Reich. Soon after assuming complete control of Germany, Adolf Hitler launched scores of arms development and building programs, to increase and enhance Germany’s industrial production, and rebuild the once powerful German armed forces. Hitler used his new state-of-the-art military to militarize the Rhineland, annex Austria and Czechoslovakia, and eventually conquer both Poland and France.
