Music And Sex

The notion of “going too far” when it comes to the producer including sexual imagery in music videos has become more and more apparent as the years go by. Sex and its glamorized portrayal have become a major component in the creation and production of music videos everyday. The role taken by the government in the amount of sexual imagery and vulgar lyrics that is permitted to be included is one that is not taken seriously, or to great lengths. Today’s typical music video is one that uses shocking sexual imagery and vulgar lyrics to break through the clutter and grab the full attention of the viewer since the notions of sex and anti-establishment are so appealing to the target audience.

According to the Record Industry Association of America, studies have been conducted by professors to reveal whether sexual images were randomly placed in videos on MTV, or if the pattern of their appearance was consistent. Results showed that “sexual images alone appeared in more than one in four videos”. Among these videos images of dating, provocative clothing, kissing, suggestive movements, pursuit, physical contact, sexual bondage and sadomasochism appeared.

Since almost all music videos are directed by men, the music videos

In more recent years, swear words are starting to come out of their so called “censorship shell”. Some words are becoming more common on the MTV as well as the radio airwaves. In todays world, society grows and changes at a rapid rate; therefore, it should not have too much trouble adjusting to the common use of profanity, considering its use is already very common.

Additional roles that women many hold in music videos appeal to sexual fantasies held by many men. This includes women portraying exotic dancers or strippers, prostitutes, and even a dominatrix. To satisfy the young boy’s fantasy, they dress as teachers, and for the older men, schoolgirls. Others include female prisoners, cheerleaders, housewives who are bored and overworked, playmate nurses, and lesbians. The role of lesbians relates back to the common theme of voyeurism, or being watched. This also stems from the ideas of pornography.

today depict their so-called “sexual dreamland”. Some common themes that tend to appear within these typical videos are those that include older men with younger women, strippers, schoolgirls, and mainly nude and available women in great numbers. Since it is made to show that the man controls the female’s sexuality and makes it into what they want, the women and their actual feelings on sexuality have no voice in these music videos. This similar theme holds true on television, in magazines, movies, commercials, and in virtually all other types of media.

When it comes to female artists, the story is greatly influenced by the individual artist as well as the ideals set forth by preexisting female movement groups. In many instances, the artist’s lyrics conflict with the images in the video. Their main challenge is to tell a different type of story without losing the attention of the audience. This is exemplified in Madonna’s controversial videos. Although offensive to many, she acted as if she was doing good in the name of female sexuality.

Censored lyrics today do not create enormous problems, but there still remains some inequality and ridicule behind all of the madness surrounding the act of censorship. Today, most lyrics tend to be censored because of profane words. In todays society this does not even really matter anymore. It is apparent that everyone uses profanity at one time or another thoughtout the progression of their days. An example of this is also the word that starts with an S, and rhymes with “hit” word. There is no point in bleeping out these words when everyone obviously knows what they are. The word choice utilized by artisis may be inappropriate for younger listeners and offend people, but they are only words. They are used as part of the English language, so when it comes to song lyrics, it should not be such a big issue to hear people swear. Again, this is only demonstrating the right of free expr
