Motor Development of Infants
The purpose of this paper is to conduct a case study longitudinal investigation of an infant of 0-24 months over an eleven week period. Through describing and explaining the intraindividual difference of the infants' acquisition of the motor 'milestones' over this period, a number of observations will be made. Firstly, the degree to which the participant's pattern of motor development adheres to the Dynamic Systems Approach will be discussed. Secondly, of paramount importance to the Dynamic Systems Approach is the theory that 'the context in which people exist will affect how they move' (Haywood and Getchell, 2001:27). Therefore, through thorough description and explanation of the intraindividual differences the participant demonstrates, it will become apparent that environmental influences enhance the development of motor skill acquisition. To assess the Lucy's motor development an observation table was created incorporating, those motor milestones Lucy should already be demonstrating as well as those motor milestones not yet present, but that should be emerging through the duration of the study. Lucy's parents were initially briefed on the procedure of the longitudinal study and several observation kits were produced. Each kit containing one observation paper and a camera. It is the aim that one test be completed each week with the data analyzed between intervals. The aim therefore is to complete a series to achieve concrete data. In addition, Melissa and Steve Samuelson (Lucy's parents) will be periodically interviewed as to their role in Lucy's motor development. On analysis, the observation results will appear as an appendix with the findings discussed and explained with reference to the existing literature on the effects of environmental influences of the development of motor skills. Therefore their study examined not only the children's' motor capacity but more over it looked at other environmental factors such as the parent-child relationship, the provisions for play in the home and community, the early play interests of the child and use of play materials. In addition it examined the role of the parents in their child's development as well as their own interests in physical activity and education. (s
