Beer Or Books?
You see them everywhere, ads for alcohol, cigarettes, even underwear. All are forms of visual argument. You look at these advertisements every day, and probably don’t think twice about them, but without realizing it, you are thinking more about them than you know. For my visual argument, I analyzed two different Miller Lite beer ads. The first ad had the title “It’s like a Book club. Only with Beer instead of Books.” There is a woman in the corner with a caption coming out of her mouth stating “I love this Beer!” Below that, there is a circle of people resembling students, and all are male, sitting around a campfire. They are all relaxed and stretched out. The fire in the center of the circle has the Miller Lite emblem in the middle of it. In the lower left hand corner, there are two pictures, one of a long highway, and one of the arm of a chair with a cup holder stating, “reload.” I believe that this ad is appealing to mostly the college male audience. Of course beer is more appealing to males ranging from 18 years of age to 30 years of age. It shows all these young guys sitting around the fire just “chilling,” with each other, “kicking it.” They are very comfortable, a
The next ad that I analyzed had a man and a woman on it. The woman is on top of the man, getting ready to kiss him, and the man is underneath of her with his arm around her holding a Miller Lite bottle. The caption on the ad says “Get it Started.” The picture is all in blue, with the Miller Lite bottle emphasized in color. The man and the woman are both very attractive. There is also a Miller Lite bottle in the lower left hand corner, faded in a darker blue, but bigger than the bottle that the man is holding. There is a beer in the lower right hand corner, a lone beer that could be seen as a phallic symbol, symbolizing a penis. There is also writing underneath the bottle stating “Pontificate over your Favorite Beer.” Most people are not going to know what pontificate means off the top of their heads. At first glance, it sounds like a sex related word, also drawing people to the beer, but it really means to behave or speak in a pompous manner, which would give men the impression that if they are drinking Miller Lite, they are going to be above other men, a type of connoisseur. As a majority of people will admit, feeling rich and fabulous is a high priority for most. The need to feel socially acceptable is greatly desired in society today. Miller Lite is appealing to the mass population using sex and relaxation, something that most everyone strives to have in their life. By appealing to the sexuality of its
