Music

There are many great composers in the Classical Era. They all accomplished many things and we still hear their amazing music today. Being a composer of music takes a talent like no other and much dedication. Many of the great composers of that era died from exhaustion or go insane, as did Antonio Salieri. Antonio Salieri endured many obstacles throughout his life, but he accomplished beautiful music and also helped other to develop their talent.

Antonio Salieri was born on August 18, 1750 in Legnago, Italy. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and had a brother who also loved music. He studied the violin with his brother and also studied the harpsichord and organ. His parents died and he was orphaned at the age of 15. A nobleman then took him in by the name of, Mocenigo, who led him to meet Gassman in Venice. Gassman became his teacher and taught him court counterpoint. He studied with Gluck, who later became his friend. By the 1770’s Salieri had written many opera’s and succeeded his teacher, Gassman, as the court composer in 1774. He was also the director of the opera and held the position of Kapellmeister for thirty-six years. Salieri traveled many places, including Milan where he opened an opera. By this time

European music in the second half of the Eighteenth Century is characterized by important stylistic changes. During this period the Arts in Europe aspired to the refinement and enlightenment of the Rococo style, which was in direct contrast to the artificiality of the Baroque style. This was a gradual process, which also witnessed the opening of modern public concerts, which was different from the "recital" of the nineteenth-century. The new style concerts had more varied performers and instrumental and vocal styles. One of the activities that mainly occupied Salieri during his old age was teaching. He had thirty-eight students of composition and thirty-four singers. Including: Beethoven, to whom he dedicated the three sonatas for the violin and piano op. 12, to Moscheles, Schubert, whom he particularly liked, Liszt, who he discovered when he was only eleven years old, Sussmayr, Czerny and Huttenbrenner, all equally honored to receive lessons from the church master of Vienna. A generous man, sensitive to the talents of young people. Salieri was an expert on vocal technique and also shared his knowledge and experience of opera and counterpoint with vocalists such as Caterina Cavalieri, a great interpreter of Italian works. Unfortunately, even today, theoretical studies of his compositional methods do not exist. We are, however, able to understand the main principles of his vocal teaching methods by looking at the short extract from the " Compagnia dei dilettanti " in 1816, written for the students at the Conservatory in Vienna. He was the founder of the Academy of Music in Wein in 1817. Salieri worked hard until the various
