Women appear to be so dependant and desperate for the men that in their absence, substitutes such as poles must be found. They seem to be in a constant state of arousal, where they are in an everlasting search of a way to satisfy this need. Without men, the slip into a deep despair and shown to be moping and only the attention of a man, no matter how meaningless or brief, can rescue them.

Other focal points in music videos are gaze and objectification. In music videos, women are posed primarily for the gaze of a male audience. They are positioned in front of the camera in an inviting manner, almost actually calling for the viewer to come and watch them. It seems as though women enjoy being on display and performing openly and willingly. It is as if women savor this kind of attention. They are set up to be this passive “thing” whose sole purpose is to be consumed by watching males. A prime example of this appears in Nelly’s “Thong song” video where typical panoramic shots survey the female bodies, giving a message that women should be leered at. Women are then stricken of their character even more and broken down into mere body parts, maybe focusing in on their breasts or legs. The point they are trying to make is that women are not humans; they are simply a series of disconnected body parts that can be easily used by men. Since women are portrayed as objects and nothing more, being characterized as mere shadows or silhouettes illustrates the notion that the woman form is not a person, rather a shape formed from the man’s desires. This makes women appear as unimportant, not unique, and sometimes goes as far to make them seem interchangeable, one appearing just as good as the next.

Regardless of the main focus in the music video, women always seem to be undressing and dressing again, as if they are always ready for sex.
