Napster

Many people in the music industry are presently fighting against the distribution of free music on the Internet. The main source for free music on the Internet is a program called Napster, which entitles users to exchange copyrighted music with other users of the program. The music industry complains that Napster has largely contributed to a lower demand for CDs, but most of the users of Napster think that the program is a great way to distribute music among their fellow music lovers. Many people inside the music industry are against Napster because they feel that, as a result, money will be lost because people will no longer buy the CDs.

The two key figures in the lawsuit against Napster are Lars Ulrich, the drummer from the band Metallica, and Rapper Dr. Dre. Other artists such as the bands Limp Bizkit, The Offspring, and Public Enemy have come out in favor of Napster. So the question still stands: should Napster be shut down?

I use Napster, and I think that it is a great program. It gives the public a chance to trade all genres of music with other users without spending an entire paycheck on music. Before I got to college I never really used Napster, but once I got to college, I decided I might as well get my hands

So should Napster be shut down? Both sides do make valid arguments to whether or not the program should be shut down. On one hand some consider it stealing, while others feel that it is sharing music among online “friends”. It is still yet to be determined if the site will be shut down, but I just recently read an article saying that Napster may start charging a user fee to get some of the lawsuits off their back. But it will be interesting to see what the final verdict is. I hope that it doesn’t get shut down.

A recent study has ever proven that 91 percent of users buy as much, if not more, music from stores as they did before they started using Napster. I feel that Napster does not, and will not, take away from the record companies. Napster is only a device that allows millions of music lovers to trade music. Chuck D, a rapper for the group Public Enemy, says, “people have gotten the technology first, and the industry is screaming foul.” He comes from the point of view that most of the Napster users out there have, why should we pay 17 dollars for a CD when we can get it for 5 dollars or even for free?

Napster was created merely so that music lovers throughout the world can share music with each other, but not have to spend a fortune on CDs. The main point behind Napster is that it was created out of love for music. Now these multiple
