Taking a Deeper Look into the Character of Mr. Davidson
Rain by Somerset Maugham is story which speaks of human condition and the twists and turns of life, particularly that of the missionary and the prostitute. The theme of the story is greatly reinforced by the characters in the story through their behavior towards certain events. Upon carefully understanding his behavior, I felt that Mr. Davidson represents something that is in us. He symbolizes the nature of humans to aspire for perfection and holiness. He is that part within us that is so concerned with morality and is afraid of sinning. Hence, this paper will tackle characterization, specifically that of Mr. Davidson since I find his character the most complex among all the others. Rev. Albert Davidson is a medical missionary. He is tall, thin, and is described in the text to have “long limbs loosely jointed” with “hollow cheeks and curiously high cheek bones.” He has full sensual lips and very long hair. His big, deep-set, dark eyes and hands with finely shaped long fingers make him appear strong. However, he possesses this deathly air which is evident in his whole being. This is even emphasized by his silent, gloomy manifestation and “tragic” eyes. The line “the most striking thing about him was the feeling he
Humans are not holy. Although we strive to become the best persons that we can be, we must give room for mistakes because we can never be prefect. We must not, therefore, lock ourselves in holiness and hold back daily happiness and even small bad things because they will tend to pile up within us and when we cannot keep them inside anymore, they will all together burst and force their way out. This circumstance is just like the rain in the story that keeps on pouring and pouring because the clouds cannot hold on to them any longer. For Davidson, he didn’t allow himself to do wrong and it resulted to the downpour of his suppressed sin, which he was not able to accept, thus leading to his tragedy. Therefore, we must not let the ‘Davidson’ in us get the better of us; and we should always bear in mind that our imperfections make us human. Being a devout missionary, he gives himself fully to his work by making sure that all he does are good but the line “you felt his affability was a duty that he imposed upon himself christianly” reveals that his good nature is only manifested because he sees it as a duty that a missionary should fulfill. Davidson feels that it is largely his responsibility to become the role model to all people and that it is an obligation to look out for people who do wrong. He believes that he has this clear sense of right and wrong and is very firm with his decisions, evident by the “he cannot be moved” that can be found in many parts of the story. Also, he exudes a strong aura of strength which springs from his desire to reach out to people who are need in of him to be able to reach God. Because of this, he lets no one or nothing get in the way of his apostolic mission. “You know Mr. Davidson very little if you think the fear of personal danger can stop him in the performance of his duty” says his wife; and so, he thinks that he has the power to change people’s lives as the line “I broke him”, “Iwelei, with its sin and shame, ceased to exist on the very day that we arrived” and “now I shall take the whips…” implies. From all these, we can gather that he is forcing himself to be all holy and perfectly good. gave you of suppressed fire,” simply states that he is concealing life and emotions within him, making it impossible for one to have an intimate relationship with him. These traits can be further manifes
