All Quiet on the Western Front

I chose the book entitled All Quiet on the Western Front, by Erich Maria Remarque. This book appealed to me because I am very interested in World War One. I wanted to learn more about the experiences of a German soldier who fought during that particular time period. The novel is set on a German warfront from 1917 up until 1918. It is specifically set on the Western Front, between Germany and France

The plot of the novel takes the reader through the experiences of a young German recruit, Paul Baumer, and his fellow soldiers, who were encouraged to enlist by their teacher Kantorek. Kantorek glorified the war so that it would appeal to his then students. He told them that it would be disrespectful to their country if they did not enlist. Paul narrates the story quite vividly, presenting exclusive imagery. Paul has several friends who enlisted with him. Muller is the school boy dreams of the days when he could sit in a schoolhouse. He is always practical and logical. Albert Kropp is also an intellectual; he has his own theories as to how the war should be fought out. He is the only one of the students who survives the war, his lag is amputated and then he is sent home. Tjaden is a small man with

The novel was very successful in pointing out the realities of World War One. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the Great War. Sometimes the book is objective rather than subjective, because Paul is telling the story, which can sometimes interfere with comprehension. The book presents daily life as a soldier in World War One beautifully. It shows what a soldier during that time period thought about the war and just about life in general. All Quiet on the Western Front is a novel that uses vivid imagery to paint a picture of life as a German soldier during WWI.

This novel relates heavily to the study of world history. In fact, history is the basis for this novel. The book has huge historical significance. It was probably chosen for the summer reading list because of its implications for the world. Nations can learn from this novel the consequences of war and why fighting is not the answer, it often just causes more problems and hostility because someone usually always loses. World War One was a turning point for the world; it showed the consequences of war, and how easily lives could be lost without any purpose. Nothing was accomplished through World War One. The only thing that it was useful for was to teach us how unsuccessful war is. The new weapon of “trench warfare” represents a new technology that was tried during this time period. It of course failed, because neither side got any
