Life As A House

I have chosen the movie, “Life as a House,” to illustrate three of the housing theories we have discussed in class. “Life as a House,” is a story about a man named, George, who works at an architecture firm, making models. He lived in the house he was raised in, for awhile. Then he tore it down and moved into the garage, while planning to rebuild on the property. He has lived in this condition for twenty-five years, failing to ever rebuild. The garage became his home, but George let it deteriorate, along with his quality of life. Meanwhile, a nice neighborhood has built up around George’s home, and George is the neighborhood nuisance. The ironic thing, I noticed, was that his little shack happened to be sitting on prime real estate. His neighborhood is right on the coast, and his shack is on the edge if a cliff overlooking a panoramic view of the ocean. George’s ex-wife lives across town with her wealthy husband, their two children, and George’s son Sam. Sam is a troubled teenager, whose once strong connection with George (his father), is non-existent. In the beginning, all of the characters seem cold and distant towards one another. But, once George loses his job, and is diagnosed with terminal cancer, h

O’Bryant’s, Attachment to Home Theory, fits George, quite well. In this theory, he emphasizes, why people tend to stay in a particular home. His theory consists of family tradition, familiar environment, and home ownership. I believe these three factors have a lot to do with, why George remained in the same place, and condition for twenty-five years. His parents lived on that land and raised him there. Although, bad memories drove him to tear their old house down, he couldn’t let go of the family property. This land may have been the only constant tradition he ever had in life. The property was definitely, a familiar environment for George, since, he grew up there, and lived there most of his life. I think the land was the only familiar aspect in George’s life. The garage by the sea was, also, the only thing George owned, besides his pick-up truck. Even though, most wouldn’t consider George a home owner, he did. In the beginning George didn’t even own his life, so owning this spot by the sea was very important to him.

At the end, George says that he always thought of himself as a house. In building himself a new house, he says, he built himself a life. This movie illustrates the importance of housing, by its influence on the condition of one’s life. Without a respectable space to call your own, it’s hard to have any connection with family and friends. Living the way George did made him
