Early Literacy
The first discussion I overheard was between my aunt and my two cousins. The older of my two cousins is 15 and the youngest is 2 but is delayed developmentally. He has very limited vocabulary, but is very expressive. The conversation was taking place during preparation for dinner that night. My aunt was standing against the kitchen counter preparing ingredients for a salad, and my littlest cousin Reese standing on a chair against the counter watching and helping. The conversation was interesting because of the abilities of my cousin that I described earlier. Reese was fascinated with all the products and tools that were on the counter being used to make this salad. As I said, he cannot talk much, so the majority of the things he was saying were only two word telegraphic sentences, but he was very clear about each thing. First he wanted my aunt to tell him what you called the big bowl by pointing to it and saying “Dis?”. My aunt told him bowl, and he tried his best to repeat it. This process went on for almost everything she would bring out of the fridge or cabinet. Some of the items he knew and would say, such as “Lem” (lemon), “cut” (knife), and Peas. The interesting part was that my aunt wanted him to help, so wou
Obviously he uses the little kid approach of, quick, ive been confronted, distract the attention towards someone else. But he still was right. ld ask him to get things, and also he would repeat the things he knew as soon as he saw them in use. So she would ask for the bowl, and Reese pointed to it first to be sure, and then after my aunt confirmed, he would carry it to her. Every time that something went into it he would say “boww”. As I said before, he is very expressive, and does a lot of communicating without saying things. He will look right at you, almost getting right into your face instead of talking to get your attention. He also would say “peas?” while pointing to things he wants, knowing to ask please. My aunt was very actively listening and trying to help out as much as she could. She would show objects and he would communicate back to her with what he could. My mom had certain things that she needed done, and my little brother was not cooperating with those, but of course, he had his reasons. The first issue was the issue of a lunchbox and its contents. My little brother seems to be having a problem either bringing his lunchbox to lunch, leaving it outside
