Just because it is ‘war’ it does not make it right. The commanders of the death camps along with the rest of the Nazi supporters had the opinion that they were the superior race and that everyone else was inferior. That is a possible explanation as to why the men and women of the camps were treated like animals but even then subjecting them to bestial torture for mostly the amusement of the guards, is not right. The commanders could have made the living conditions of the prisoners more acceptable, even if they were going to be herded into the gas chamber the next day and make the last few days of those, a painless one. The commanders bear much of the responsibility for the mass murders and the inhuman “medical research” experiments that were allowed to go on. They could have joined with other commanders and put a stop to Hitler. But most of them were too scared to oppose him, in the fear of suffering the same fate as their prisoners. Hitler allowed and dictated the fate of the Jews as well as other German citizens. The concentration camps were set up to keep a tight lid on the people of Germany and he could not have people opposing him in fear of a possible rebellion. None of these can be excused. Hitler was the leader of the country as well as the army, therefore he is responsible for the actions carried out by the men under his control. During the war other countries committed atrocities such as the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki but Hitler did worse. Furthermore, this one lesson should never have to be repeated in the future. Millions of people suffered unnecessarily under Hitler’s rule and as a result the burden of responsibly is placed alone on him.
