“I’m Your Horse In The Night”
Luisa Valenzuela’s, “I’m Your Horse In the Night”, is a short story that can be interpreted in many different ways. Many questions arose in my mind while reading this story, like, was her fantasy a dream or was it a reality? Luisa Valenzuela wrote this short story in such a way that the reader must think deeply about what is being said. The woman referred to as Chiquita heard the doorbell. It rang in such a way that she knew it was the man referred to as Beto. They embraced and remained silent. Chiquita remembered him always being silent, never one to express his feelings in words. Questions enter her mind about his whereabouts in Argentina. She hadn’t heard from him in months. She did not know if he was alive, or whether he had been captured, or was in hiding. With him he brought a bottle of cachaca, an alcoholic beverage, and a Gal Costa record. Chiquita and Beto begin listening to the music and slowly drink the alcohol. No words were said; just sweet caressing and deep looks into each other’s eyes. They begin to make love while the music sings, “I’m your horse in the night”. Chiquita awoke to a phone call claiming that Be
This story made me feel deep sympathy for the women known as Chiquita. Here is a young girl who is head over heals for this young man Beto. She spends all her time with him when he is home and remains at home waiting for him to return. She has put her life on hold for the sake of her deep love for this man whom she barely knows a thing about. What does she receive? Life was ripped from her and she was hauled down to jail. “I’m Your Horse In the Night”, a story of a young girl who faces much hardship in her life, yet has an undying love for a man who, in return, shows his undying love for her. Luisa Valenzuela did a wonderful job telling this story with such vivid detail even if the readers were led to believe that this was only a figment of the imagination. I believe that Chiquita’s night with Beto was real and that their love is something to be envied even though they faced many hardships together. Was this encounter a dream? A dream, defined in the Webster’s dictionary, is an idea or an image present in the sleeping mind; a reverie, daydream; something greatly desired; something excellent or very beautiful; an extravagant fancy.
