Boiler Room

In today’s society, there are opportunists that will attempt to take advantage of those in our society. Boiler Room is one such example of these opportunists taking advantage of others in society. Boiler Room is an illustration of our current society, a society in which morality and ethics have taken a back seat to profits, and status. Boiler Room is a story about a college drop out who desperately wants to please his father, a federal judge who is very judgmental with his son. Seth Davis closes a casino he operates in his own house. Thinking he\'ll please dad, he takes a job in a small brokerage house, where after training, they promise phenomenal pay. The newly hired trainees make calls to lists of prominent to middle class men and apply high-pressure tactics to sell the companies exclusive initial public offerings (IPO’s). Seth becomes one of the firm’s best trainees and is exceptional at sales. Curiosity surrounding the firms dealings leads Seth to discover that the firm isn’t what it is cracked up to be, and is faced when numerous ethical dilemmas.

The movie focuses around the main character, Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi), a intelligent young man who has made thousands of dollars running an underground casino out of h

An underlying theme of this story is the drive that Seth has to gain the respect of his father. He shut down the very lucrative casino business he was running to try and impress his dad, and originally got the job at the brokerage to try and make his dad proud. His fathers continual criticism of his actions, forced Seth in some aspects, to dig himself deeper into the firm, and the deep he went, the more he learned. The father illustrated his own moral conflicts, as Seth repeatedly came to him his approval, approval that he couldn’t give. At the end of the movie, when his father finally agrees to help bail Seth out, he gets caught up in the investigation, and his position as a Federal Judge is jeopardized. This is when Seth becomes the “hero” of the story, as he refuses to cooperate with the FBI unless they keep his dad out of all investigations. This illustrates Seth’s maturing morality.

The personal gain and self interest illustrated by those involved at JT Marlin have an effect on society. In today’s business world, such companies cause what I would equate to a ripple effect. Like a rock thrown into a calm body of water, the rock will splash, and the water would ripple. I equate the rock, in this case, to the firm JT Marlin. The body of water is society. JT Marlin is established to make the owner a lot of money, and is a clever way of stealing form society. This is when the rock gets thrown into the water. The resulting splash is the effect that the firm is having on society. The ripples indicate the results the firm’s action has on society. Because of their unethical and illegal practices, they are hurting the business of the ethical and legal organizations. Society will begin to lose trust in the industry as a whole because of one firm’s indiscretions. This not only harms other brokerage firms, but will cause a ripple effect felt throughout the economy.

Seth begins to struggle with his conscience as the storyline progress, beginning to feel remorse towards one man whom he convinced to invest his entire savings into a phony stock. At the time, Seth knew that he was getting the man to invest in a stock that did not exist, and that illustrated some of the most unethical attitudes and actions during this
