NORMANDY: THE EVENTS BEFORE

Men you are about to take part in a great invasion. Some of you won’t come back, some of you will. I want you to fight hard and proud for your country… This is what some of our soldiers were told before they went into battle on June 6, 1944. Everyone knows what happened that day, we invaded France, but what happened before? What lead to the attack on the French coast against the Germans? Some important events took place before the invasion of Normandy. To fully understand those events, you must analyze them in; the objects set for D-Day, the preparations that took place, and the bombardment of the Germans around the wall.

Before Operation Overload could take place, objectives for the day had to be set. There were two main goals set by Allied leaders. The first of those was to crush through the Atlantic Wall and retake France. The Atlantic Wall went under construction in December of 1941, under the order of Hitler. The Atlantic Wall was constructed to provide a defense in France against an Allied invasion. The main defense would consist of German troops in concrete bunkers with high-powered guns. Mines and obstacles were to be laid along and in the water to prevent amphibious att

The second main objective was to start an offensive against Germany. This offensive hoped to bring about the end of World War II in Europe. This was needed because the Allies were being stretched out on two fronts; one in Europe, the other in the Pacific.

Standing in the way of the allies was mother nature, the night before the original D-Day, June 5th, she decided to declare war against the Allies by relesing a strong storm June 4th. Eisenhower had to postpone the invasion until June 6th. An army meteorologist gave Eisenhower a report and told him the storm would let up for two or three days and allow the invasion to continue, hopefully. Fortunately for us, the storm did let up and the operation continued on June 6th.

When Stalin asked Churchill and Roosevelt who was going to command Overload they told him Eisenhower. Eisenhower didn’t find out until he flew to Tunis in December of 1943. Upon his arrival Roosevelt told him, “Well, Ike, you are going to command Overload.” Ike immediately started delegating others to other points of authority. He put General Omar Bradley in charge of al American forces on D-Day. He put General Bernard Montgomery in command of all British and Canadian Forces.

The second major preparation was the selection of commanders. To have a great force an Army has to have great leaders. That was proved when Allied leaders appointed Dwight D. Eisenhower as supreme commander of European Theater of Operations. Eisenhower was chosen for his great leadership, responsibility, and knowledge of the political aspects of war. Eisenhower was almost 54 years old at the time.

So as you can tell important events did take place before the invasion of Normandy. We studied this in the; objectives, preparations, and bombing of German forces the night before. D-Day, the battle of Normandy will be remembered in the hearts and minds of many for years to come.

The major commander of D-Day was General Bernard Montgomery. He was in charge of the British 21st Army Group. He took the job as
