In 1978, Arthur Blank co-founded The Home Depot, the world’s largest home improvement retailer. Last year, when he retired from the company as co-chairman, The Home Depot was a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and one of Fortune Magazines “Global Most Admired Companies.”
Arthur Blank was born in Queens, New York in 1942. He received an accounting degree from Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and worked as an accountant before joining the small pharmaceutical firm started by his father. Blank later became an executive at a Daylin drugstore unit. He then moved over to the Handy Dan Improvement Centers where he met Bernard Marcus.
In 1978, Arthur Blank and Bernard Marcus were fired by Handy Dan. In 1979, they opened their first three Home Depot stores in Atlanta, employing 200 associates with $7 million in sales, but lost nearly $1 million. In 1980, the stores were profitable and the company went public in 1981. By the end of 1998, Home Depot had grown to 761 stores, employing 157,000 associates with $30.2 billion in sales. Home Depot was named Fortune magazine’s Most Admired Retailer for 5 consecutive years.
Arthur Blank created Home Depot in a way that brought innovations to the marketpl

Below are additional random excerpts from the paper...
Blank also insists on listening to fans to build a better product. He personally responds to every letter and e-mail he receives. He has encouraged ongoing discussion, not just among season ticket holders, but also for casual fans and for those who have simply lost interest. Blank knew that cheap tickets might get people in the building, but he wanted to make sure they came back. So he set out to improve the atmosphere inside and outside the Georgia Dome. Blank has made wholesale changes in upgrading food quality, friendly service and an enthusiastic atmosphere at Falcon games. There are many activities such as bands, music, and games that occur outside the stadium before the games start.
In February 2002, Arthur Blank bought the football franchise Atlanta Falcons. Blank is Chairman, President & CEO of the Falcons. Since acquiring them, he has made significant changes that have created renewed excitement for Falcon fans across the region. In his first press conference, Blank stated, “We will fill up the Dome”. After acquiring the team, he announced that season tickets would be on sale for only $100 per person and some individual game tickets costing as low as $10, resulting in a huge upsurge in fan interest.
Arthur Blank is not your typical football owner. He is a hands-on owner. He enters the building through the media door, and actually speaks to the press. Not only that, he speaks to the players. He speaks to free agents. He speaks to agents and other owners.
Blank has consulted with other NFL teams such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers to borrow ideas. Other owners see the buzz that Blank has created with the Falcons, and want some input to better their own teams.
