Iris Chang's "Rape of Nanking" is a book that fails to heal but rather sears all efforts for good international relations because it prioritizes passion at the cost of basic historical facts. While Christopher Browning’s “Ordinary Men” tells the story of Police Battalion 101, and how they play a role in the Second World War in Europe. Both of these books outline what kinds of items a civilian would be subjected to during wartime. This ranges from persecution, certain death, or to begin made to mobilize to help one country’s war effort. In Brown’s Ordinary men he shows in detail the sequence of events and individual reactions which may turn ordinary men into killers.

In “Ordinary Men” Browning goes on to tell what the Reserve Police where doing while occupying the nation of Poland. He told how they were responsible for searching out Jews and disposing of them. Browning went in depth to tell how these ordinary men were turned into killers. Browning told accounts of individuals who in the start would not kill anyone, and then they were transformed into ruthless killers. To be comparative to Chang’s “The Rape of Nanking” there must be an examination made of how the soldiers of the Imperial Army treated the civilians of Nanking. The Japanese solider were very cruel to the military and the citizens of Nanking. They were invading under a take no prisoners policy. The Japanese did not discriminate when they were killing the inhabitants of Nanking, it did not matter if you were young or old civilian or military. Chang covered a vast amount of details in the happenings that took place during the invasion of Manchuria. Chang also did a great job in stating many supporting details of what happened to who and who was willing to help to save the lives of others.

Both of Browning’s “Ordinary Men” and Chang “The Rape of Nanking” do a good job describing the events that took place during the Second World War. It seems as though each author took somewhat of a different perspective and had somewhat of a different focus on what they were writing about. It seemed as if Browning was coming from a military journal standpoint simply telling of the specific actions of Police Battalion 101 and how their action were in relation to the German war effort. While Chang book was very informative from a military standpoint also, but it did not have as much focus on military actions as Browning. In Chang’s writing she talked of this issue yet she also went into specific items that took place like want the Japanese were taking or destroying. She also went on to describe individuals that helped out the citizens of Nanking. Both of these writing are very valuable from a historical standpoint, it just seem as though Chang’s approach to the situation she was trying to portray hold a bit more ground.
