The genesis of violence and aggression.'

No horror you can imagine has not already been done by someone to somebody else. Similarly there is no horror you could perform that has not been enacted in imagination or fantasy by somebody. Man is a dangerous animal. In this talk I describe the complicated interplay between the atrocities of the internal world and the expression of violence and aggression in external reality. What factors contribute to ordinary everyday violence by young people in our streets or to the pursuit of war by national leaders?

To tell you the truth I had great difficulty knowing where to begin this project. How can one talk about the roots of violence and aggression in this connection, at Oswiecim/Auschwitz, without looking at the individual, the group or mob and at a Meta level, the leadership and administration of states and communities. And yet also how can we extract something meaningful from such a broad approach.

So to help me think of this whole area, to help me get some structure I developed these four examples, these four short examples.

The first example is someone I work with, a young man of 28, Bill. The offences for which he is in

His personal history is significant. His father disappeared when he was a baby, his mother had an alcohol problem and worked as a prostitute. He felt that he never had a good relationship with her and that she would beat him with a stick. Her partner, after his father had left also used to get drunk and beat him severely several times a week and also tie him up and lock him in a cupboard. The man was also violent towards his mother in front of him and finally this nice man used to sexually abuse Bill. His mother had several other relationships that were either insignificant or similarly violent, except one, Raymond. He was a great bloke, according to my patient, but his mother took advantage of him and he left. ‘It was all an act’ Bill said of his mother, she was a sham and he could see through her, so he had no basis for trust.

Take a look at this picture. (slide 17) I am interested in this man smiling, and particularly in this man. In the prison where I work we would say that he looks a bit of a numpty, a man who doesn’t quite get things right and so is always trying to find his place in a group. But you can see how it is a relief for him to have this position. A position of superiority, where all that is bad, disgusting, and weak is located in these poor humiliated men here. But it is only temporary, the Jews, the holders of these projections are destroyed and then the individual receives back all of these inadequacies and critical parts. That is the thing about our own internal demons. We can push them out of our minds, we can even put them on to others but they do always come back in some form.

Thirdly, There is the Jozefow Massacre when the Reserve police Battalion 101 had the task of rounding up the 1800 Jews and of shooting the women, children and elderly. Josefow is some distance to the east of here in the Lublin District.
