Opposing Views On Surrogate Motherhood

“Infertility, which affects as many as 1 in 6 couples, is defined as the inability of a couple to conceive a child after one year of unprotected sex...one-third of the time it lies with the female.” The “American Dream” has changed very little over the years—a happy marriage, a family, a nice secure life in the suburbs...but for some people, that dream will never become a reality. Due to high infertility rates, many couples are unable to reproduce without outside help. Surrogate motherhood offers an alternative that allows couples to parent children who are still genetically connected to one or both parents. Surrogacy is a better option than adoption for many couples because changes in society have resulted in a lower number of children available for adoption, most infertile couples would like a newborn baby, and there are a number of benefits to have children who are genetically related to their parents.

Medical advancements have allowed for creation of more reliable forms of birth control and educators have improved sex education for kids and even adults; thus resulting in a lower number of children being put up for adoption. As stated by COTS, or Childlessness Overcome Through Surroga

Realizing that some couples are completely unable to reproduce, there are alternatives to surrogacy. Adopting a child would fulfill the need to raise a child as well as giving him or her a chance for a normal life. The desire to have a baby who is genetically connected to one or both parents is understandable; however, if the need for a child is strong enough, matching DNA should not be the biggest concern.

Surrogacy saves couples from the frustrations of being stuck on a waiting list, having a child who has already been influenced by someone else, and who is not genetically related to them. Surrogate mothers give infertile couples the chance to make their dreams come true.

Some say that surrogacy should be banned because some may be unable to draw the line between paying someone for carrying the child and paying for the child. In reality, the infertile couple is paying the surrogate mother to allow a place for their baby to grow. The child already belongs to the couple because he or she is conceived from at least one of the parents. The Catholic Church openly looks down on surrogate motherhood as it violates the “no sex without babies; no babies without sex” rule that Pope John Paul VI clearly declared in a letter he wrote about artificial birth control. In black and white terms, Jesus was not born because his parents had sex; therefore, my counterargument to a Catholic is that it is the couples right to have a baby whether he or she is conceived naturally or artificially.

"We do not consider children property. Therefore, as we cannot sell what we do not own, we cannot be selling babies." A parent would be offended if someone referred to a child as a pet, but surrogacy is similar to going to buy a newborn puppy. Instead of taking a child to the store, the adults go to a
