Organizational Communications
When I was young I never realized how many leaders there actually are in the world. The only people I pictured being leaders were kings, queens and presidents. I never would have thought of the local Kmart night manager as being a leader. Leaders show up in many different limelight’s some bad and some good. Today if someone asked me what makes a person a leader? I would respond by saying they are not a follower. One thing almost everyone’s parents tell you when you’re a child is “to be a leader not a follower, just because Billy jumps off the bridge are you going to jump”. Back then I would laugh at them and they would tell me someday it would make sense and well that someday is now. For me the number one thing a person that is a leader has to have are followers. So with that in mind what my parents said works. If Billy jumps off the bridge and I follow him just because he did it then I am a follower and Billy is a leader. On the other hand if Billy jumps and I don’t follow him then he is not a leader he is just stupid. Besides just having followers a leader needs to have many other characteristics. I think it would be impossible for a leader to posses every trait at its maximize potential that is li
both the leader and follower a chance to influence one another through ideas and opinions. Leaders also need to have well-established active listening skills. Leaders need to treat their followers as knowledgeable beings by giving them respect and listening to their opinions. A leader also needs to be a good public speaker in order to influence followers. When a leader and a group can successfully communicate ideas with one another it will help the group as a hole in completing their main objective. A leader needs to have self-control and self-confidence. Leaders must also have extensive knowledge of the business they are leading in before people will look up to them. When a leader is able to rise above any situation thrown at them and come out on top they are showing great examples of self-confidence and self control. To me a leader must be a respected, trusted and well-rounded person. The biggest problem I see Tyler having as president is his public speaking skills. Have the time you cant even figure out what he is trying to say. One thing you need to be able to do, as the front man of any organization is talk to people and express the needs of the organization. Tyler does a horrible job of this. For example a few months ago we were having our alumni weekend were close to 100 former members of the fraternity were in town. Our fraternity needs to attain 60,000 dollars this year to do much needed work to the house. This money is raised through donations from our 400 alumni. While the alumni were in town Tyler’s job was to express the needs of the house to the alumni president, treasure, and housing corporation manager. Myself along with Tyler and to other members of our fraternity sat down with these three men in hopes of devising a plan to raise the money. Tyler tried to explain our situation with the house to these 35-year-old successful businessmen but only succeeded in upsetting them by not being prepared. Our alumni were looking for estimates on the repairs that were needed to get done. Instead of having estimates and some kind of presentation ready Tyler would just tell them things like “the baloney is ready to fall and we don’t want to kill a bunch of chicks”. At this point the alumni were quite discouraged considering they came all the way up to Chico to listen to Tyler so the pretty much just walked away. Later that day myself and two other active members found ourselves apologizing to the alumni for Tyler’s actions. Fortunately we made amends and have now gotten the repairs started no thanks to our supposed leader. Trait operates by laying out precondition for a successful leader. These precondition are the six traits listed above. One has to realize though that just possessing the traits does not make a leader. The actions one take after possessing the traits is what will truly make them a successful leader. There are plenty examples good leaders that I have had in my life that I could ramble on about at this point but I am choosing to do the opposite. The leader or should I say non-leader I have selected for this paper is Tyler Jones. Tyler was elected president of my fraternity in December 2001. At this point he is one month away from ended his term. Tyler is one of my good friends but he has been hands down the worst leader I have ever seen in my life. My eight-year-old cousin displays better leadership skills on his t-ball team then Tyler does as a graduating senior in college. Looking back there is actually no
