PA - Good Poor Man's Town

Many poor people came to Pennsylvania during the 16th century to escape their lives in England that were consumed with poverty and hardships. While some of these people had enough money to get to the United States, others did not. These people, called indentured servants, would have someone pay for their trip over to the United States from England, and then they would work a certain amount of years to pay off their debt. Looking at the wages for work, number of possessions, and life after servitude, one will see that Pennsylvania was a good place for poor people to live.

In An Historical and Geographical Account of Pennsylvania the author, Gabriel Thomas says that Pennsylvania is a good place for the poor British to move to because “Poor People (both Men and Women) of all kinds, can here get three times the Wages for their Labour [than] in England …” (Thomas, 43). In addition to having better pay in America, the author also says that not only is food cheaper than England but land is inexpensive as well and also produces twice as many crops. In American Husbandry it says, “there is very little poverty, and hardly such a thing as a beggar” (Hollitz, 47-48), this would be enticing to the poor of England who wallowed in

poverty and were beggars. It also goes on to say that everything, with the exception of labor was cheap. In addition, an income in Pennsylvania went much farther than that of the same amount in England.

Advertisement for a Runaway was just that, a man published an article in the Pennsylvania Gazette to get his runaway indentured servant back. At first one might think that this indentured servant ran away because his master mistreated him, and this could quite possibly be true, in a physical and emotional sense. However, when “Stophel” left he also took with him “a bluish Cloath Coat, green Nap Jacket, Snuff coloured Breeches, and Linen Jacket and Breeches” (Potter, 47) on top of other numerous items. To be poor, this particular indentured servant had many possessions with him when he ran away, and if this is a representation of the majority of indentured servants, and inference could be made that they were well taken care of.

On top of just life for the poor being better in America there seems to be a thought that almost everything that is done in America is better than when it is done in England. For example, in American Husbandry, it says, “little freeholders are in ease and circumstances much superior to the little farmers in England” (Hollitz, 48). It also goes on to say that the horses are better and that “shooting and fishing … are in greater perfection than in England” (48).
