UN Agencies in Palestine: Occupied TerritoriesThe United Nations has played a role in the Palestinian refugee case from its beginnings half a century ago. Unlike other cases the UN has established a separate regime to provide protection and assistance to the Palestinians. The special regime established for the Palestinians is comprised of the UN Conciliation for Palestine (UNCCP) and the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The creation of this special regime was due in large part to the responsibility of the UN itself in creating the conditions, which led to the displacement of the Palestinians. The UN simply put felt “guilty”, so they created the regime specifically to deal with the Palestinians. The United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine (UNCCP) was established as the “successor” to the office of the UN mediator for Palestine. The agency is comprised of the United States, France, and Turkey. The UNCCP was mandated to as
and Gaza Strip. The UNRWA educational services currently include both general and higher education as well as vocational, technical and teacher education. The UNRWA administers 59 refugee camps in its five areas of operation, and employs more than 20,000 persons, the majority being refugees. The professional and technical assistance is provided by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The purpose is to meet the educational needs and assist in the employment opportunities for the Palestinian refugee. The World Health Organization (WHO) is also present and provides a wide range of health services, including disease prevention and treatment, health protection and promotion, environmental and family health programs to meet the Palestinian refugees basic needs.
