When Einstein was younger, he seemed to have an innate aversion to authority, conservative views, war, etc. Eventually this developed into a belief in pacifism, which played a major role in his outlook on life and science. Einstein described his pacifism in this quote: “My pacifism is an instinctive feeling, a feeling that possesses me because the murder of men is disgusting. (Severance 69)” The major reason Einstein became a pacifist is more than likely a result of his environment. During Einstein’s spare time, he was hard at work creating some groundbreaking theories in physics. In 1905, the German Annals of Physics published four of Einstein’s scientific papers. The first was on the theory of Brownian motion; the second on the photoelectric theory; the third on the special theory of relativity; and the fourth on electrodynamics of moving bodies. It was the paper on the special theory of relativity that spawned the quintessential equation, E=mc2. Most of what Einstein wrote about in the special theory of relativity deals with the speed of light and energy, so the formula was a byproduct of his work on that theory. The formula is best explained through an analogy from Einstein himself:

What most people don’t know about Einstein is that he had much difficulty learning throughout his childhood. It is hard to believe, considering the esteem people hold him in for his incredible intelligence and imagination. From the start, it was apparent that Einstein would have troubles because he was slow in learning how to speak, and even once he learned how, he was deliberate in his delivery. When teachers spoke with Einstein, they instantly tagged him as being lazy and dreamy for the manner in which he expressed himself and the slow rate at which he picked up the mandatory studies in school. His first principal even went so far as to say that it didn’t matter what profession the boy prepared for because he would never be successful at anything (17). Although it seemed evident that Einstein had a learning disability, nobody took the time to consider that maybe he just thought on a higher level. So given all this censure, it is understandable that Einstein simply got so frustrated that he was misunderstood that he didn’t trust inflexible authority, which is a characteristic of army life.
