The Gaia Theory, one theory that incorporates the ideas of “Mother Earth” showing signs of distress, was first thought out by a scientist named Timothy Zell in 1970. The vortices normally associated with crop circles are water and plasma. Water vortices are air and water, rapidly spun into a whirlwind and then carried across land, leaving behind crop circles (Andrews 70). A plasma vortice is similar, although it is created with electrified air. This process brings to mind electrocution, as the plants in the crop are being “shocked” and are formed into circular patterns. Colin Andrews debates these plasma vortices and whirlwinds, as they would not be able to form the more complex patterns. He cites a Dr. Terence Meaden, who has enough evidence to give credit to these whirlwinds for creating the plain, unadorned crop circles (Andrews 71).

Authentic crop circle formations are designed by an intelligent mind; there is no doubt about that. Whether or not these circles are a type of communication between other extraterrestrials species, or if the messages are for human beings, is still unknown, and is extremely puzzling.
