Hate Speech

“I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it.” (Voltaire) This is a quote that I strongly agree with. Today freedom of speech is used to help make changes all over the world but in some cases it is used to help encourage ignorant beliefs that have nearly died out over time. I am speaking about Hate Speech. It is one of the morally wrong things that the first amendment allows us to do and protects us from being persecuted by the government for it. I am not advocating any of the hate speeches made or agreeing with what they say but I am agreeing to the idea that no matter how bad or wrong it may be they should still have the right to say it.

“The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is a book that claims that Jews are secretly controlling the world or attempting to. It is a book that hate groups abide by and read almost religiously. This book has helped to inspire the mass murders of millions of Jews around the world. Amazon.com and Barnes & Nobles sell these books in their stores and on the Internet. The two companies have been criticized for selling these books by the American Jewish Committee and I am sure by many other groups but they stil

The War in Iraq has once again brought heat upon our First Amendment right and the people attempting to censor and limit it. A fine example of this takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico. A teenager wrote a poem conveying her opposition against the war in Iraq and it was aired on the School’s closed circuit television system. The consequences of this action were the suspension of the teacher who allowed her to read the poem and the closing of several school poetry clubs.

In countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, and even North Korea, countries that the U.S. isn’t on good terms with, when President Bush makes a speech about stopping these countries from gaining power or going to war with them I am sure many citizens of these countries view his speeches as Hate Speeches. This is another example that helps to illustrate the fact that hate speech is relative.

A point that I would like to get back to is the fact that the word hate can mean very different things to different people. If I were to criticize my teacher and point on the errors in his methods of teaching and all his flaws and petition for him to get fired that teacher would be inclined to think that my critiques of him and speeches are of Hate. But to those who agree with my point of view, my critiques and speeches, would be thought of as the truth. So who is to determine what is Hate Speech? Should it be left up to a Judge? The police? A jury? A committee of congressman?

When Al Sharpton speaks about more power for the black community no one seems to speak out against him claiming that his speeches are racist. A minority can form a political group and gain the support of the general public. However if a group of white people
