Love Of The Father

No parable of Jesus has been used or quoted more than that of ā€œThe Prodigal Sonā€. The impact and the effect that this story has had on the lives of people who have heard it are tremendous. J.E. Compton says, ā€œthe greatest of all His [Jesus’] parables.ā€ We as human beings have always struggled with forgiveness, compassion, and acceptance from the Divine Other. Victor Hugo described God as ā€œa divine and terrible radiance.ā€ When you and I discuss how an infinite God can have a relationship with a finite human being there is always a sense of discomfort or of deep darkness. This is a common problem when Christians everywhere began to develop a relationship with the divine God. This parable; however, sheds a new light on the relationship between sinful man and a holy God. It gives us the idea that God is our father and we are his loved children, also that he desires a relationship with us. However, if we picture God as touchy, unapproachable, and easily annoyed, if we image God as haughty, indifferent, or angry, if we invest him with unlovable qualities and cringe before his glance, we will dismiss the way of trust in the gospel of grace. When you and I miss the concept of God as ā€œAbbaā€ then we seriously jeopard

ā€œBut the father said to his slaves, ā€˜Quickly, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him; put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. And get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.ā€

ā€œI will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, ā€˜Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.ā€

Immediately our Lord begins to put the background on the canvas. This verse already begins to state the glorious home with the father, before things began to take a turn for the worst. In the home there’s the ā€œcertain man,ā€ and that is God the Father. And this father had two sons. One of these boys is called the elder and the other is called the younger.

Last is the relentless affection of the father towards his prodigal son. The father, after seeing his son down the road, runs to him, embraces him and kisses him. I’ve heard it once said, when translating this verse it read. ā€œThe saw him a long away off and was filled with compassion towards him. He ran to him, embraced him and could not stop kissing him! This parable presents the loving father as a symbol of God himself. His ready, unconditional, and unstinted love and mercy are manifested not only toward the children that stray away, but also to the repentant sinner. ā€œFor the Son of Man [Jesus] came to seek and to save the lost.ā€ This parable tells us rather about a father’s love than a son’s sin. Brennan Manning says, ā€œJesus didn’t say that maybe God was love, or that it would be nice if God were love. He said, GOD IS LOVE—period. But there is more to the message of Jesus. He insisted that His Father is crazy with love, that God is a kooky God who can scarcely bear to be without us. The parable that makes this truth so obvious is the prodigal son, the parable of the loving Father. The emphasis is not on the sinfulness of the son, but on the generosity of the Father.ā€ The son had his speech carefully rehearsed. It was an elegant, polished statement of sorrow. But the old man didn’t let him finish. The son had barely arrived on the scene when suddenly, a fine new robe was thrown over his shoulders. He hears music, the fatted calf is being carried into the parlor, and he didn’t even have a chance to say to his father, ā€œI’m sorry.ā€

More than that I hope that my understanding of God will grow into a deeper love for the grace and the mercy that He has shown me. ā€œI pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have the power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this knowledge that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.ā€

No this son had probably been rehearsing this speech since he started on his way home, memorizing it and changing it. And now he begins to recite it to his, should be angry, father, but he doesn’t get very far. Here we see the genuineness of the son’s cry of repentance toward his father. But the father seems to not even need to hear anymore. Look at what the father says.
