The Vatican Radio and L’Osservatore Romano, the Vatican newspaper, were used as communication devices. The L’Osservatore Romano was flown and air dropped over German and Soviet occupied territories, so that the occupants could be aware of the events of the war. The Pontifical Aid Commission and the Office for Information were two agencies that were created to coordinate relief work; both agencies were under the direction of Msgr. Giovanni Battista Montini, the future Pope Paul VI. Vatican City, other agencies, and governments helped Jewish persons obtain passports and leave the continent to go to South America; well over 3,000 Jewish persons went to South America. The clergy gave fake baptisms; Hitler made an agreement with the Vatican City that he would not persecute Catholic converted Jews. When Italy was under German control, thousands of Jews were hidden and fed in Vatican City and Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence outside of Rome.
