Affirmative Action
Think of this, a man is ignored and shut out at work because everyone thinks he got his job because of his color. The problem is, he was more qualified than every other person, black or white, that applied for the job, and he is treated like he is not qualified. The ways that people look at each other is different in the workplace because everyone wonders if they or a co-worker has gotten their job due to affirmative action. Minorities think that affirmative action is used to help past wrongs, but whites see it as a form of reverse discrimination. People say that unqualified minorities get jobs from more qualified whites, and that is causing more qualified people to take lower paying jobs. Since the beginning of the use of affirmative action, America has become a racially tense and a strained place to live in, since whites and minorities fail to agree on the effectiveness of this practice. Is affirmative action fair? Are minority groups on equal footing? Is gaining employment for minorities difficult? Is education easily obtained for the minority groups of people? Affirmative action programs are needed to develop a diverse labor force in today’s economy. Unaffected by constitutional issues, these affirmative action programs are designed to improve diversity in the workplace. Some of the strategies affirmative action programs have are implemented to encourage other forms of diversity in the workplace. “These programs include aggressive outreach to women and minorities, including recruitment and mentoring programs” (Leporini). Job sharing and flextime are other forms of diversity in the workplace, which have been a direct result of these corporate policies of affirmative action. For example, Kraft Foods used outreach programs for women and minorities to develop a more diverse managerial staff. “Affirmative action was originally designed to help minorities, but women, especially white women, have made the greatest gains as a result of these programs” (Boston, 1996). One of a corporation’s largest objectives is to have a diverse work team. Affirmative action policies have been successful in employing diverse groups of people. “Equal opportunity cannot just be a slogan that philosophizes good deeds, but must become a part of the organization’s management objectives….” (Hill).Many successful corporate entities have followed this philosophy in choosing their employees. Corporations take into account the workers’ qualifications, education, experience, and other factors. “We are in a strong economy where corporations are competing for quality workers and the majority of new entrants into the labor markets are women and minorities” (Leporini).
