Acceptable Risk: Reader’s Response Journal
This opening chapter of the book introduces us to the main characters. The main characters at this time are Stanton, Kim, and Edward. Kim seems to be a shy person, who seems a bit odd at times. Since the book is supposed to deal with the ethics of Prozac and other drugs of the sort, I bet she will be involved in these herself.Edward is also shy, similarly to Kim. Stanton wanted them to “hook up,” and it seems that it may have been a good idea. They are very similar people. They were both nervous around Stanton, and each one made each other feel less nervous. Stanton is a gullible, outspoken man. He is very complimentary, a little too much. He shows a different side of the family of his and Kim’s, a much more “sophisticated” and much more outspoken. He and his wife are much different people than Edward and Kim. In this chapter, Kim and Edward go to the old Salem house. Kim and Edward seem to connect more in this chapter. Edward’s daily flowers sent to Kim show that he is interested in a long-term relationship. They find in the house things that amaze each other for different reasons, Kim for historical and family, and Edward for scientific and historical.
Edward shows more of a cunning side. He has no problem in invading Elizabeth’s grave, and he even takes the head of her to do tests. He shows that he is not superstitious or afraid of any “common” evil, like the dead body. Edward agrees to live with Kim in the cottage. This means that the story will most definitely involve Edward directly to the house in Salem. He and Kim will tell this story together.
