Howling Grace

A howl of a wolf will definitely send chills up and down our spines no matter how brave we are. A wolf is an animal we usually lookup to and respect. Therefore, there have been lots of discussions about this mammal throughout the history of mankind. So it is inevitable to have folklore and myths about this wonderful creature. Most of our myths and legends have portrayed the wolf as a threat to human existence and it has been judged as one of the most evil creatures that roam the earth. However, the wolf is an animal which is greatly misunderstood and in reality it is totally harmless if left alone and it surely deserves much more respect.

The wolf is a doglike wild carnivore of the family Canidae. The grey wolf is the most common of all wolves. It was found in North America and Eurasia and today it is primarily found in Asia and from Alaska to the northern plains states. The wolf has a broad head suggesting its intelligence. Its robust limbs are ideal for hunting and surviving in the rugged terrain. It has large feet to give it the right grip. Its chest is deep but narrow. The ears are so straight as if they are signifying the firmness and the determination of the animal. The fur is very dense and has a rich whit

Wolves were not always subject to hatred. The Red Indians, who lived in America before the Whiteman came there, admired this intelligent and social animal. If you have watched the cartoon series or the film tilted ‘White Fang’ you would probably know what I am talking about. This story is about a little boy and his friend, a wolf named Fang, who endure together in adventure and finally save the day. This story shows how the wolf is protected by a Red Indian chief and how intelligent and gentle the animal is.

The cartoon series ‘Teenwolf’ had always been one of my favorites and the concept of a werewolf has always been there in a corner of our minds. What is a werewolf really? According to legend it is a man who automatically turns into a wolf on full moon days. ‘Were’ is an old English term for man. So werewolf means wolf-man. Werewolves were not friendly creatures as we see in ‘Teenwolf’, but they were apparently man eating monsters. Moreover, the legend of the werewolf originated in Germany. In the 1500’s Europe was under deep superstitions and disbeliefs. It is told that a wolf was found eating humans and when the villagers were about to catch him he turned into a man, and he turned out to be one of their own villagers. Then they tortured the man and killed him. This man could be linked to a modern day madman who goes on killing innocent people and he had supposedly taken the shape of the harmless wolf. However, modern science has not found any traces leading to the existence of a real werewolf. In reality wolfs are animals that mind their own business and they seldom attack us.

Christianity has also been harsh on wolves. According to biblical manuscripts, St. Patrick was preaching Christianity in a cer
