Pericles Funeral Speech

Pericles’s Deathless Funeral Speech

Even though it has been thousands of years since the speech of Pericles’s many of the issues he touched on still apply today. One issue I am going to touch on that Pericles used in his speech is the military, and how the tactics of war of today’s society are closely related to those back in 430 b.c. Another aspect that I will touch on during this paper is the government. The similarities of government that were used back then and what is used in our country today is mind-boggling. The democracy used in Athenian times is very similar to what is used in the United States today. There were still differing social classes in Athens, as there still is in the United States society thousands of years later. The last aspect that I am taking from the speech is how the grieving and aging process are still very similar to what people in the United States do today when a loved one is lost.

The military in Athens opened its doors to the world. It was far different than most other countries. Athenians were not afraid to let people in. They were open to anyone who was interested in seeing what went on in Athens. They were not afraid of opening their doors to foreigners and they did not excl

To compare and contrast the Athenians to the United States today as we all know it is actually pretty simple. When I say this I mean that almost all of the issues the Athenians have dealt with we as Americans deal with everyday. We are also a country that opens up it’s military and it’s country to the world. We let millions of people come and go through this country as they please. We do this knowing that there can be and probably will be many consequences resulting from this. We let people of any color and ethnicity in to our country. During war we also usually march into foreign soil alone and fighting off many different races of people. I am going to use the Iraq war on terror as an example. We marched thousands and thousands of are soldiers into battle on foreign soil to stop a madman from tearing this world apart. We like the Athenians do not like going to battle but we also will stand up for what we believe in and always try to do the right thing. To contrast the Athenians military to the United States military today is the fighting style for the most part. What I mean by this is that most of the wars these days are fought from the air and from a distance. There is not much hand-to-hand combat used in war anymore.

To bring this paper to an end, although Pericles speech was 430 b.c. many of the issues still apply in the American culture, as we know it today. Our society today has the same general rules that applied to Athens. The only difference between a lot of these issues is that we have put our modern touch on them. Pericles’s deathless speech is one that has lasted this many years and will most likely be used until the end of time.

In Athens they have differing social classes. Instead of blaming someone for being in poverty they try to help the poor through it. Even though the workingman in Athens has to go to work everyday he still has a say in what happens in politics. Pericles stated the stronger friend was the doer of the relationship. In other words the person with more money or power was looked at as the stronger friend. The workingman was able to pay back the friend so it made him feel better
