Pornogrphy And Its Place In Our Society

It is the opinion of some, that pornography has no place in our society, and therefore, should be banned by our government. I will attempt to explain to you, and clarify, why pornography not only should not be forbidden, but has a definite place in our society.

The United States of America affords all of its citizens certain unalienable rights. These rights are outlined in the first amendment of a document known as the Constitution of the United States. The first amendment gives us the freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and the freedom of press. Our country was molded after this document. While we are on the subject of offensive images and obscene material, I have a question: Who decides what is obscene or offensive? As stated previously, pornography and obscenity, is a matter of personal opinion. Who is the all encompassing deity who will be appointed to save this country from itself? Who is arrogant enough to tell me what I believe to be obscene. That is a decision I would rather make on my own. Another question I have relating to this issue pertains to the criteria used to determine whether or not something is, or is not offensive. Are the images in Hustler magazine considered offensive? How about Playboy? Or maybe the Victorias Secret catalog? If so, what is the feeling as it relates to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, and the Robinsons/May lingerie sale advertisements in the Sunday L.A. Times. Where is the line drawn? Pornography has been given an unfair, negative label. There are many positive aspects of pornography. Using pornography as a sexual aid comes to mind.
