Death Penalty
We live in a society where there are criminals who commit certain crimes and in some circumstances, the victims’ are repaid with the loss of the criminal’s life. There are other ways to solve this problem rather than to succumb to animalistic and medieval ways of legal rectification. We humans do not have the right to play God. We were all created equally and are supposed to be judged equally after death; we are not to judge other people if we are not any better than they are, not even if worse. If we, according to political and moral law, are not given the right to take a life, why should the responsibility be given to the State which is ruled by people? When did the protection of our citizens give us the authority to kill those who went against it…. they lost their privileges as citizens of our country but they are still human, and that is a God-given right, not an American given right. This whole issue with the approval of the death sentence has raised many concerns with the public, because of the public’s concern with fairness and equality. But when I say “We, the Public”, I am not speaking for all of us. Alberto Morales, a fellow classmate at the Inter-American University believes otherwise. He stated
Along with the destruction of many lives comes the waste of millions of dollars each year because of capital punishment. It costs more to kill a human than it does to sustain his life. A study by the New York State Defenders Association showed the cost of a capital trial is more than double the cost of life imprisonment. The cost of each execution is approximately $3.2 million, or about six times the cost of a life imprisonment sentence. The reason it costs so much to sentence a person to death is because of the money spent on the prisoner waiting in jail until his death, which could be up to 20 years. You also have to consider all of the legal costs and court fees. In conclusion, what we see is some people believe that capital punishment is part of our nation’s duty to protect its righteous citizens. But it is not this legal procedure which provides us with a safety blanket. With all of the propaganda that has been spoon-fed to society about capital punishment, we have gotten a false understanding of its true reality. The American public has gotten the idea that everyone who has been put to death is a vicious, cold-hearted killer. And sometimes that just is not the case. Maybe some citizens of our country cannot uphold to the standards of our legal system, and yes, it is our nation’s duty to strip them of their rights as citizens and remove them from society to protect those who do well. But removing them from society and stripping them of their rights as citizens of America does not mean that we can “play God” with them. They may not be citizens, but they are humans, and in the land of brotherhood, this is something that must not be forgotten. In contrast to this argument though, we have Cynthia Gomez from the Inter-American University who states: “No human being has the privileged power of deciding who lives and who dies. No human being can apply the Death Penalty. For one reason, the death penalty is a wrong measurement of punishment. Let’s say there is a trial and a person is found guilty of committing a crime such as rape. This person is sentenced the death penalty. Five years after that person was found not guilty. Our first victim was innocent and suffered the fatality of humans’ mistakes. People-makin
