Pride And Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice, written by Jane Austen, centers around a woman who struggles to come to grips with how her own pride prejudiced her. When Charles Bingley, a rich single man, moves to the neighborhood, residents are thrilled. Especially thrilled is Mrs. Bennet, who hopes to marry one of her five daughters to him. When the Bennet daughters meet him at a local ball, they are impressed by his outgoing personality and friendly disposition. They are less impressed, however, by Bingley’s friend Fitzwilliam Darcy, a landowning aristocrat who is too proud to speak to any of the locals.

Bingley and the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, soon form an attachment. Any serious relationship between the two is opposed by Bingley’s sisters who do not approve of Jane as a wife for Bingley. Darcy also opposes the relationship and believes that Jane is indifferent to Bingley. Meanwhile, Darcy finds himself attracted to Elizabeth despite his objections to her family. As Darcy grows more interested in Elizabeth, Elizabeth continues to despise him and is instead attracted to George Wickham, a handsome and personable militia officer. Wickham lies to Elizabeth and the locals to gain their favor. Wickham’s tale makes Darcy appear not on

In my opinion this novel contains many lessons and good moral values. It does not, however, reflect any view on any religion. It fails to mention anything about God, church, or the Bible. It reflects a nineteenth century view on love, marriage, and women. It encourages good moral choices but does not base any choices on God. Instead, the novel bases choices on wealth and social status.

Dialogue also plays an important role in the novel. The novel opens with a talk between Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. The pieces of dialogue are consistently the most important parts of the novel. All the major turning points are revealed through the dialogue. Even Elizabeth’s self-recognition is related as a person talking to herself. Elizabeth’s talk is sensible and forthright, her father’s sarcastic, and Mr. Collins’ speeches are silly.

ly proud but cruel, and Elizabeth accepts Wickham’s account without question, disliking Darcy even more because of it.

This novel continues to be popular today not only because of its memorable characters and the general appeal of the story, but also because of the skill with which it is told. Austen displays an excellent use of irony and dialogue. Austen maintains an attitude of good-humored irony throughout the novel. With the first sentence of the book, Austen establishes the major theme and tone. She states, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." This sentence introduces the theme of marriage, which is central to the novel’s plot, and also introduces the tone of irony. Austen also uses irony in the structure of the plot, placing her characters in situations that seem to signify one thing and are later revealed to signify something else.
