Moulin Rouge

Stars Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor, John Leguizamo, Jim Broadbent, Richard Roxburgh, Garry McDonald, Jacek Koman

‘The greatest thing you’ll ever know is just to love and be loved in return’

Set in Paris 1900, Moulin Rouge is a story about beauty, freedom, truth and above all love. The start of the movie is energetic and enthusiastic beyond all beliefs, which moved onto being melodramatic and catastrophic. There is a lot of comedy in the story and is extremely entertaining for the audience. The costumes are well-designed and authentic to the period.

With his previous films William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet and Strictly Ballroom, Baz Luhrmann exhibited his penchant for lurid and bold filmmaking, but with Moulin Rouge he has t

aken his flights of fantasy to new heights. To have characters set within the ‘baudy’ and bohemian turn of the century Paris, suddenly bursting into refrains of the modern song, Elton John's Your Song is a leap few other filmmakers would attempt, let alone complete, but it's to Luhrmann's genius that he succeeds. There were other modern tools used by Luhrmann in the movie, for example props – such as hand guns of present time were used.

All up the characters are well ‘dramatis personae’ and a delight to watch. The cast ranging from characters as obscure as an Argentinean who suffers from narcolepsy (as explained by Talouse ‘awake one minute, then asleep the next’), to Zidler’s diamond dogs (who can be very nasty at times).
