Prayer In Public Schools

Voluntary prayer should be institutionalized as a daily part of life in public schools. Many people believe that prayer is not allowed in the public schools. This is wrong. Unfortunately, this mistaken notion sometimes extends to teachers, principals and school boards. Prayer is in fact allowed in the public school system - in school busses, at the flagpole, in student religious clubs, in the hallways, cafeteria, etc. However, it is not normally permitted in the classroom itself when a class is in session. We should not have teacher-led prayers in public schools, and school officials should never favor one religion over another, or favor religion over no religion or vice versa. I also believe that schools should not restrict students' religious liberties. The free exercise of faith is the fundamental right of every American, and that right doesn't stop at the schoolhouse door.''

There are many moral and ethical topics about which a social consensus exists, for example the abolishment of slavery, racism, and universal suffrage. These are taught freely in public schools with little objection. But why won’t the school board or legislatures let them teach freely or at least give t he student the choice of whether or not they wan to get involved in prayer.
