Prepare For Takeoff

Since the tragedy of September 11th, our nation’s airports have undergone several security changes to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Some of the changes are more obvious than others, like the presence of the National Guard in our airports. However, there are some changes that are not seen nor felt by the public until they are presented with them, like not being allowed to bring drinking containers down into the terminal. Because most people are not aware of the changes, things tend to run a little slower now in our airports than normal. Louis Armstrong International Airport, formerly New Orleans International Airport, has been no exception.

For 2 and a half years I was employed at Armstrong Airport by one of the venders and witnessed first hand the affects of September 11th. Because of the new security regulations, passengers had to wait longer to board their planes, which made my job more of a hassle.

The best way to make a flight experience more enjoyable starts before one boards the plane. It is now suggested that passengers arrive two hours before their flight’s departure time. Do arrive early as suggested. When arriving at the airport, there will always be men and women with

When arriving to the flight’s specified terminal entrance, one must always have a form of identification with either their ticket or flight information so a security official can check them. Only ticketed passengers are allowed in the terminals unless a family member has a special pass given to them by the airline’s ticket agents. The lines to the entrance of a terminal can be long; therefore passengers are asked to comply. If one waits until arriving at the entrance to look for their information, it will take longer for security to verify the information and it is just inconvenient for others. By just simply having the necessary information ready can help things run smoothly.

During the boarding process, the first people to be asked to board will be small children traveling alone, the handicapped, and anyone traveling with a small child. Once they are boarded, the airline will start boarding the rest of the plane from the rear. They will call by seat numbers. While the boarding process is in progress, the airline can pull a passenger to the side for a random search and pat-down. Once again, co-operation is expected. If one is pulled to the side, allow the security official to search the carry on items and your person. This is done for the airline’s protection and the passenger’s protection. Be sure to co-operate.

Although September 11th has changed our way of living, do not be afraid to fly. Flying is the safest way to travel contrary to the beliefs since September 11th. If a passenger feels uncomfortable flying with an ethnic looking person, they can either request to be placed on another plane or the ethnic people can be removed from the plane if enough passengers complain.

Once inside the terminal, go to the flight’s gate and prepare to check in with the ticket agent there. As briefly said before, a terminal is the hallway where an airline’s planes arrive to drop off and pick-up passengers. A gate is the waitin
