Primary Colors Vs Last Hurray

To begin with, both of these novels share a great similarity

The Politician’s desire for winning may be the cause of he moral and ethical changes in the American political system today. Taking into account, Natural Law, consists of reasoning that emphasizes the equal freedom of humans and the need of humans to preserve themselves.

On the other hand, this is quite opposite in Primary Colors, Stanton recruits a black man, Henry Burton, into his campaign because Stanton knows that having a black man on his staff will improve his chances of getting votes from democratic minorities. When Stanton first meets Burton, he tells him, “I met your grandfather once when I was a boy. I hitchhiked to Washington to hear him speak. He was a great man.” Because Stanton desperately wants Henry to join his campaign efforts, he uses this introduction as a method of getting Burton to believe that their opinions and beliefs are the same.

Religion is another important moral and ethical factor in which these two novels greatly differ. In Primary Colors, Religion is very passive, and not at all highly taken into consideration. On the other hand, in The Last Hurrah, the Irish Americans’ identity centers more on religion where the Irish considered religion to be the central part of defining their individualism. The people felt elevated by the goodness of their leader, Skeffington, where he was portrayed to be a good leader, and his people being good followers. He was portrayed to play his role rightly because he was influenced highly by Religion. Ironically, although religion was one of the central focuses in his life, he had the ability to manipulate his people. For example, while speaking on the phone, Skeffington makes noises tossing coins, wanting to portray to his community that he was being religious by being devoted to his rosary beads. The author also intended to invoke religious symbolism as well as humor. For example, Gorman says to Skeffington, “Ah well, that’s natural enough….If you met the Pope, you’d talk about religion (O’Connor, 192).” Moments like these present O’Connor’s design towards skepticism and irony, while also putting things in a religious and cultural context.

because both the main characters in these books are politically a part of the “community”. Skeffington in the Last Hurrah, and Stanton in Primary Colors, both became a part of the community because they knew they would be much better off to make material rewards. Politically and ethically, the desires for material rewards are considered to make claims on feelings and moral judgments. For example, Skeffington ran for Mayor, while Stanton ran for presidency because they knew that joining the community would give them “power”.

Ethically speaking, in political campaigns, language is the “matter” of speech. In Primary Colors, the speech content is overall unpleasant. For example, use of language may be considered politically unethical in the way
