Race discrimination seems to be the most obvious type of discrimination. Other discriminations such as gender, religion or physical appearances are harder to identify. There is only one time I am sure I was discriminated against on the basis of gender. A few years ago I worked as a collector at a debt collection agency in La Porte. After about a year of working there I was asked if I would like to train all the new collectors that came. I agreed to be the collections trainer. Every few months I would train a new person as the turn over rate was rather high. One day I got a new person to train. Unlike all my past trainees this one was a male. I spent a long week training this rather arrogant man that was only 20 and never had any college training. His previous job was working labor in a factory. I trained him on several rules and regulations. I week later when he was on his own I overheard him breaking Fair Debt Collection Practice Acts rules. I corrected him and had to spend another few days training him again. He didn’t catch on very fast like the previous people I had trained.
Three months later our supervisor resigned. Being there only two years I was pretty sure I didn’t have a chan
I went to the Vice President because most people in my department were very upset. I asked him why I wasn’t considered for the position as well as other females that had been there many years. He told me one of them was asked a few years ago and declined at the time. (she had children at home still). He also said he could tell Brad was just supervisor material. I said, “but he has no supervisor training, we hear him breaking FDCPA rules all the time and he isn’t even very good at what he does. How is he going to help others get better?” The VP said, “oh well we are sending him to some management and supervisor seminars.” I said ok but stressed my opinion that I thought this was a big mistake. Sure enough many people in the department became upset.
There were very few men that worked at this company. We had a president, a vice president and a few salesmen. The vice president actually started as a collector about 10 years back! The vice president was the man that told this collector (Brad) he was the new supervisor. When Brad came back from the meeting where he was told he was supervisor he had such an arrogant and smug look on his face we all hated him.
