Koran/Thousands And One Nights
According to Arabic Scholar Robert Irwin, the culture that produced the Thousand and One Nights is the same culture that embraced the teachings of Muhammad contained in the Koran. Write a paper in which you analyze one or more episodes from Thousand and One Nights in relation to a passage from the Koran. Do the values represented by the two texts correspond to each other or do you see a conflict? Even though the work of the Thousand and One Nights represents basically a female that is a strong and clever idol and continuously imaginative and creative, it seems like the Prologue of the Thousand and One Nights is a story not in favor of women. It corresponds with the writings of the passage ‘Women’ in the Koran. The values represented in the “Prologue” of the Thousand and One Nights confirm the ones written in the Koran, “4.Women” because men are represented as authoritative and forceful whereas women are portrayed as beautiful “things”, there only to obey, entertain and please the male characters. When King Shahzaman in the Prologue of the Thousand and One Nights saw his wife cheating on him he concluded that one couldn’t trust women. The promise “to marry for one night only and kill the woman the next morning” is supposed to prevent him “from the wickedness and cunning of women” (Thousand and One Nights 1575). The females in the Prologue of the Thousand and One Nights are portrayed as weak and second rated, below the status of men. This value is presented in the Koran as follows: “Men have authority over women because God has made the one superior to the other, and because they spend their wealth to maintain them” (Koran1431, 1432). The King chooses brutality and murder to make up for his suffering caused by the betrayal of his wife. Since men are superior to begin with, females are seen as inferior to men. Evidently the females in the Prologue of the Thousand and One Nights are the cause of all evil and consequently all the women are evil and mean only evil. Therefore man has to make use of his power and set the woman straight; in this case by killing all the women in the kings’ royal state. The brother of Shahzaman, King Shahrayar, almost shares the same fate with his brother. He becomes violently angry when he finds out about the unfaithfulness of his wife. A second time is shown that women are not trustworthy. Once again, a wife is represented as disloyal to her husband. Even though he is very mad about this betrayal he does not kill her immediately.
