This, ECE 481, senior design project is sponsored by the Western Michigan University Physical Plant. There are two main objectives to this project. The first is to design a web-based interface to collect and display data from power meters located in each building on Western Michigan University’s campus. The second is to design an accurate exterior lighting sensor to control outdoor lighting. The web-based interface will collect data from approximately 100 meters installed in buildings around campus and present it in a highly accessible web site. The system will also e-mail weekly and monthly reports to head officials at the WMU Physical Plant and maintenance officials throughout campus. The exterior lighting sensor is designed to control a relay to turn on or off the outdoor lighting under its control. It is intended to replace the less accurate sensors currently in use and to provide a more accurate light threshold to reduce energy waste. The meters are being installed for three reasons: The following assumptions were made while making the Cash Flow table for the economic study: a Tax Rate of 40%, and a three-year MACRS depreciation on the asset. Any variations on these two assumptions would have small and little effect on the outcome of the IRR for this investment. The rest of the figures used in the analysis of the cash flow are given in table XXX. Table XXX shows the IRR of the Photocell while the number of lights attached to the circuit increases. All other data is held constant to the values as given in table XXX.
