Mysteriously disappearing into the Atlantic Ocean, the island of Atlantis has been the subject matter of its own mythological story for many years. As told by Plato, the story starts when the Gods divided the earth into separate parts, each taking control of their deserved piece.(Hefner, “Atlantis the Myth”) Poseidon gained control of what was to be Atlantis. Soon after, he fell in love with a mortal women named Cleito with whom he would have ten sons with. He made his first born son the first king of Atlantis and his other sons became princes that would rule separate portions

Reading this one maybe overcome with a sense of complete and utter bliss. How could a country such as this succumb to evil? It is simple, the more success they gained the higher they would think of themselves. And once they reached a level of almost perfection, the citizens of this utopia became overconfident and slowly disregarded the rules that were given from the beginning by the gods, and the morals were tossed out the window like a badly made paper airplane that crashed and burned all the way to the ground. Once it reaches the end of the tale Plato brings a sense of fear into the element that is sent out through the pages and grabs the reader when he tells of how the gods saw this lack of respect and ill spite towards others which lead to the demolition of the whole entire isle. How could something that once was so great do a total turn around and end up being ruins at the bottom of the sea?

This myth of Atlantis has been scrutinized for years and its validity of being true or not has been questioned as well. Many people have said that they have found evidence of the lost isle but the truth still holds true this myth is just simply that, a myth. With the fairy tale sort of images that it gives off for Plato put so many intricate details and he could make it as perfect and as detailed as he wished it to be without any worry if it were actually true or not. The truth still remains that this story was just another example of how the Greeks used mythology to tell the stories of the gods and to teach lessons of what is right and wrong.

Through the mysterious aspects and odd fairytale like qualities, many audiences are drawn to this text. Such as in the text it explains how the gods’ supernatural powers created this island and handed the responsibility to the people who inhabited the land.
