Sigmund Freud (1856-1939), Austrian physician, neurologist, and founder of psychoanalysis. ‘The thematic approaches of early psychology’. The paper poses the issues of how psychology came to be. Also noted are the psychological schools of thought, Behaviorism, Cognitive Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Functionalism, Gestalt Psychology, Humanistic Psychology, Psychoanalytical Psychology, and Structuralism.

The founder of psychology is believed to be Sigmund Freud because his studies were so controversial. Freud had developed the psychodynamic perspective with the help of his followers. This all started with his sudden interest in Hypnotherapy, which is the therapeutic use of suggestion. It was later to be abandoned because his studies proved that not everyone could be hypnotized. Moving on, Freud had developed a treatment for maladaptive behavior known as psychoanalytic therapy. It is the attempt to bring the unconscious causes of distress to the conscious level. Gestalt psychology began as a reaction to behaviorism. Gestalt’s focus was on the collection and analysis of data from the bottom up. It was the investigating of elements individually an appreciation for their importance as a whole that was greater than the sum of their parts. Gestalt psychologists apply this concept to relationships between people. Each individual puts forth their gifts to create something greater than each member could individually.

Developmental psychology is the changes that take place throughout a person’s entire life span. This is an on-going study that incorporates quantitative changes such as the subject’s changes in weight, height, and motor skills, and also qualitative changes in the subject such as development of speech, intelligence, morality, and creativity. There are many different theories of developmental psychology such as, mechanistic, organismic, psychoanalytic, and humanistic.
