Ehtnographic Survey
For this assignment I chose to do an ethnographic survey of two local fast food restaurants. I had visited each of these restaurants, observing work ethic, the style of work in respect to Fordism and Taylorism, types of people that work at these restaurants, as well as customers that go to each of these restaurants. Both of the restaurants were in the same vicinity, in Hempstead. I visited White Castle and McDonalds. I visited the White Castle restaurant around 6 in the afternoon. This turned out to be a very interesting visit. When I arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see a very clean restaurant, with employees cleaning that tables and mopping the floor. As I sat and ate my 50 cent cheeseburger I realized that the work ethic of the employees was very poor. They only did what they were ordered to do by the manager. I heard the manager say to one of the employees, “Put a new bag in the trash.” It seemed that the manger was ordering the employees around rather that asking them to do something. After about 20 minutes I realized how little the employees cared about their job and what had to be done. They were there to make their job as easy as it could be and get paid. They did not care about their job it was ju
Not to sound racist, but I believe that people think that whites are still superior to blacks. They treat whites with more respect. But also it seems as though the problems that occurred in these two restaurants had to do with black people. I don’t know if it has anything to do with the crowds that tend to flock to each restaurant or just the way the franchise is run, but the two restaurants seemed to be on two opposite ends of a spectrum. The type of people that went to McDonalds seemed to be very different. It seemed like it was more of a teen hangout rather than a place where mothers would take their children. It also seemed like there was a majority of white people at this restaurant. During this visit, nothing seemed to go wrong. I did not see anyone complain about service or about an order being wrong. The type of people that went to White Castle also had a big impact on what went on during my visit. There were primarily black mothers with three of four children and an occasional few white people. There were two men in front of me who placed a rather large order for their employees who were working late. After placing this order they stepped aside waiting for their food. As the other people who ordered afterwards were also waiting, everyone became impatient. There were two black mothers who became rather impatient and started yelling at the manger. The manager did not really know how to respond. He was very disrespectful to these women and was not willing to listen to their concerns. The manager happe
