Race & Sport

Michael Jordan draws large audiences to every game due to his amazing playing style, and he is called "the god of basketball." Tiger Wood has won golf tournaments many times, and the media reports his score everyday during the game no matter how he plays. Michael Johnson is the fastest runner in two-hundred-meter races in the world. Ichiro Suzuki became one of the best leading hitters in Major League Baseball (MLB) during his rookie season. There are many races living together in America. Therefore, America is sometimes called a melting pot of races. In the sports' world, it is a slightly different story. In that context, have you ever thought about the relationship between race and sport? Why do black athletes sometimes dominate a particular sport, such as basketball? Why are there many Asian and Hispanic players in MLB?

According to Sociological Dynamics of Sport and Exercise, there are three possible theories that might cause racial differences in sport participation. The first one is "biological reasoning," which means all differences come from genes. According to this theory, the reason that black athletes dominate National Basketball Association (NBA) is that black athletes tend to have advantages in physical features com

If you watch a basketball game, you may notice that black athletes tend to dominate the court. I think the reason for this situation is not only because black athletes are superior in physical features to other races of athletes, but also their social status and general tendency to want to play basketball. African American communities tend to gather in urban areas, such as downtown in the city, and there are more fields covered with concrete than covered with grass. Under these circumstances, African American people are almost forced to play basketball rather than baseball if they want to play a sport. Also, African American children are more likely to want to be a professional basketball player rather than a swimmer because they feel more possibility to become a basketball player due to heroes of basketball, such as Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. This kind of theme has a tendency to draw more black athletes toward playing basketball. Thus, this tendency becomes a cycle, and increases the number of black athlete in basketball.

Contrasting with these successes of non-American players in baseball, there are no Asian or Hispanic players in National Football League (NFL). American football was developed from soccer and rugby football in America (History of football). For that reason, American football is one of the most popular sports in America. However, this sport is hardly played in other countries. This situation could be a reason that we hardly see any other races rather than American athletes in American football. People tend to participate in more popular sports than minor sports, and the more people
