Puppet Master
A Critical Assessment of President George W. BushIn light of the tragic events of September 11th, there has been an abundance of criticism surrounding President George W. Bush and his administration. This came shortly after the debacle of Florida’s involvement in the voting irregularities of the Presidential Election of 2000. There were many that held beliefs prior to Bush being sworn in, and then adopted opposing views once terrorism came too close to home. Despite the societal changes, the question that should be posed to President Bush is: What has changed about you? And the answer is nothing. There are incidents that occurred in the Fall of 2001 that showed Bush in a different light—as a human and not as an unapproachable, privileged superpower. However, President Bush is still a puppet, and now we need to find Geppetto. For it is the puppet master that allowed us to see his creation as a living entity, and it is to him that a ‘good job’ should be bestowed. The master saw these events as an opportunity, an opportunity to win over constituents . . . and it did. The incidents that occurred are as follows: At 7:59AM, American Airlines Flight 11 departs from Boston
The only insight that can be given about President Bush and September 11th is speculative evidence. His breaks in emotional composure seem planned, as a ploy to get shaken Americans to see the human in George W. Bush. For example, there was a television shot of him on CNN [on September 13th] where his eyes are filled with tears over speaking about the victims in the Oval Office. He utters, seemingly choked up, “I’m a loving guy and I’m also someone, however, who has a job to do and I intend to do it.” The critics and fans of Bush can all agree on the moment during the September 11th disaster in which things turned around for our new ‘hometown boy.’ A testimony can be given that it would be when President Bush talks to retired firefighter Bob Beckwith at ground zero. After shaking hands with exhausted rescuers in hard hats, Bush climbs atop a pile of soot-covered remains of a fire truck and tells the swarm through a bullhorn, “I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon.” The utterance came from an impulsive moment, and Geppetto was not there; however, it shows that the student may be on his way to surpassing his master. There are many who are criticizing Bush not for being elected president, but rather how much he knew about the events. The fact that September 11th can even be construed as avoidable if President Bush just did “something else,” is not all that preposterous. According to his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, George Bush was told in his daily intelligence briefing on August 6th that Osama Bin Laden might use terrorist hijackings to attack the United States. She described this briefing as “analytic
