In Lord of the Flies, Golding uses little children, deserted on an island to show that humans need a strong central government in order to survive. When that strong central government dissolves the children resort to selfishness and animal instincts to survive. At first the boys are listening to Ralph and chores are getting done. The children enjoy the primal urge to hunt and soon after they capture a wild boar they want a bigger game. They start to chase after Ralph to kill him but when they follow him onto the beach there is a surprise waiting. The military has shown up to rescue the children. Golding uses children to show how humans have these inherent animal desires in all of us. Once the struggle for power started up on the island the order was lost. Without a strong authority the children resorted to animal instincts and selfishness in order to live their lives on the island.

Hoop Dreams and Player Piano show how classifying a person at an early age can have a disastrous outcome on a person’s life. We saw how Arthur and William were put under so much pressure to be good at basketball because that was their only ticket out of the inner city. The good thing about Arthur and William was that they were given an opportunity to get out of the ghetto through school. Socrates and Plato would have not given Arthur a chance to succeed in life but he was a late bloomer. Since he continued in school he was able to better himself long after Socrates and Plato would have caste him aside. In Player Piano people weren’t given a chance to succeed after they didn’t do well on their test. The government classified you one way and there was no way you could ever recover from that, you were forced to live a boring life of no purpose until you died. Network to me showed what happens when there is no governmental intervention when it comes to dispersing information to society. Television is turning this society into a bunch of mindless fools who are only concerned with watching somebody else embarrass himself or herself for money. Society must be aware of who is controlling the information because that has a profound effect on the education of its citizens.

In the Godfather the Italian people looked up to Marlon Brando’s character. They saw him as a strong protective authority figure that understood people needed protection and they weren’t always getting it from the government. In the movie a baker comes to the Godfather because his daughter was attacked by a man she went out on a date with. The baker trusted in the judicial process established by the Government but it let him down when the boy was found not guilty in a court of law. He turns to the Godfather in order to receive justice for this crime against his family. He begs the Godfather to do something to the boy and eventually the Godfather agrees but it comes at a price. The baker is now in the Godfather’s pocket and will be called upon to do a favor for the Godfather in the future. The baker understands that he must give up some of his freedom in order to feel protected by the Godfather. He knows that down the road he will most likely have to break a law when the Godfather calls upon him but the laws he first abided by didn’t protect his daughter so he decides to go with the Godfather.
