On other hand, discrimination is negative behavior directed toward a group of people. In other words, discrimination is unfair behavior to a certain group of people. Discrimination can be practiced against an individual or institution; People acting on their own do individual discrimination. Institutional discrimination occurs when an institution makes laws or rules that are unfair to a group of people. One example of individual discrimination is a white person who throws a rock at a school bus, which has black students on it. An example of institutional discrimination is a state legislature preventing black children from attending a predominantly white school. Discrimination is usually against a “powerless” group by a more dominant group. Discrimination is the behavior of a prejudice attitude is racism.

More recently, the term “hate crimes” have developed because of discrimination. A hate crime is a crime committed by an offender because of the victim’s race, ethnic background, religion, or sexual orientation. Hate crimes involve vandalism, assault and battery, and intimidation through threats or harassment, against an individual or a group. Until the late 1980s, hate crimes were scarce and unheard of. Now, in the United States, laws at all levels (local, state, and federal) have high penalty for crimes motivated by prejudice.
